schiacciata con l'uva...or...delicious, easy foccacia with grapes!

so...
fancy name.
delicious bread.

there is something so lovely about baking homemade bread.
the process of kneading, the smell of baking.
and this bread, with fresh, hot grapes, oozing their own jam, just puts this over the top.

you could serve this as an appetizer, with a good Italian salami.
or as a brunch dish, with a nice frittata on the side.
or as a simple dessert, drizzled with honey, with a fine Port to serve.

or, as we did.
just hot from the oven, standing with the babies underfoot, begging for another bite.

enjoy!

Schiacciata con L'Uva
Adapted from epicurious.
Makes one loaf.
1 package active dry yeast (2 1/4 teaspoons)
3 tablespoons dry red wine
1 tablespoon honey
3/4 cup warm water (110-115 deg)
2 1/2 - 3 cups Italian "00" flour or half all purpose flour and half cake flour (just not self-rising!)
1/4 cup good quality extra virgin olive oil
1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt
3 1/2 cups good grapes (1 1/2 pounds)
1/2 cup sugar

Stir together yeast, wine, honey, and warm water in a large bowl until yeast is dissolved. Let stand until bubbly, about 10 minutes.
Stir in 1 cup flour...mixture will be lumpy but don't overmix! Cover bowl with plastic wrap and a kitchen towel and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, 40 to 50 minutes.
Add oil, 1 1/2 cups flour, and sea salt and stir until a sticky dough forms.
Knead dough on a floured work surface, gradually adding up to 1/2 cup more flour if necessary to keep dough from sticking, until dough is smooth and elastic but still soft, 8 to 10 minutes.
Transfer dough to an oiled large bowl and turn to coat. Cover bowl with plastic wrap and a kitchen towel and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about an hour.
Turn out dough onto work surface and knead several times to release air. Cut dough in half. Roll out one piece of dough, keeping remaining piece covered, with a lightly floured rolling pin into a rough 12" x 10" rectangle. Transfer dough to a lightly oiled, rimmed baking sheet and gently stretch to cover as much as possible of bottom.
Scatter half of grapes over dough, then sprinkle grapes with 1/4 cup sugar. Roll out remaining piece of dough in same manner and put on top of grapes, gently stretching dough to cover grapes. Scatter remaining grapes and 1/4 cup sugar on top and gently press into dough. Cover pan with plastic wrap and a kitchen towel and let rise in a warm place until doubled in bulk, about an hour.
Preheat oven to 400*.
Bake schiacciata in middle of oven until well browned and firm in middle, 40 to 45 minutes. Loosen sides and bottom of schiacciata with a spatula and slide onto a rack to cool. Serve at room temperature and enjoy!

the very hungry caterpillar party, part 2

we are still working hard on our very hungry caterpillar party!
we've done a lot since my first post and hope to still do more!
i am loving the fact that mv has his hand in almost all the decor for this party.
he might not care (now or later) but i'll take pictures and make sure and show him when he's a teenager ;)

watercoloring butterfly wings...

....and mama put the finishing touches on!
still needs antennae and a backing.
it'll be hung like a kite over the buffet!
watercolors + paper + cardstock + paint.

finger-painting for the front door decor!
paint + paper plates.

i juiced an entire fresh watermelon to freeze for watermelon lemonade.
took. ages.
$3.

sewing projects!
a button caterpillar shirt for the baby...

...and a more "grown up" polo for mv.
(we didn't want to make him look too childish with a matching button shirt...)
buttons i had around the house + $2 white tee from hobby lobby + brown marker. (easier than trying to stitch brown thread in the correct place!)
$3 caterpillar applique + an existing polo.

finishing up the mailer invites and addressing envelopes.

making the buffet table labels!
printable images from an online source + cardstock + glue.

finishing the deliverable invites!
i had to use chopsticks to get those little suckers in there with hot glue!
yikes.

old mason jars/lids that i had + netting from the craft closet + pom pom caterpillars, that i had previously made + cardstock.

painting a giant piece of plywood from lowe's for a big, backyard chalkboard!
leftover chalkboard paint + $7 plywood.
plus, we can totally use this as a future backyard game for the boys!

fingerpainting "suns" for part of the backdrop for pictures!
just need to add construction paper "rays".
paint + paper plates.

and last but not least, my wonderful aunt brought down six boxes of kids' books, toys, and teaching supplies from when she taught kindergarten, and i found this gem in there.
a bit beat up on the edges but brand spankin' new.
mv is going to love it.

can't wait to party!

goodbye, summer. hello, fall!

i don't know why i'm having such a hard time letting go of this summer.
i'm usually begging for fall to begin.
cooler temperatures, scarves, flannel, colored leaves, pumpkins, soups.
but, i guess it's because we had such a wonderful summer...my boys made it such a lovely summer...that i'm having a hard time letting go.
the heat is bearable when you have a blonde-haired, blue-eyed, two year old, looking up at you, asking if he can pretty please splash you with the water from the kiddie pool in the backyard.
summer is fun when the baby gets to toddle around, sans clothes, and shriek with joy when a ladybug lands on his chubby arm.
the sticky, damp weight of the air is welcome when your husband pulls you outside after the kiddos are down to light another sparkler, just for us.

but, it is the middle of september.
and fall is my favorite season.
so, here's to lovely fresh produce you can't get all winter, to summer dishes and summer soups never blogged, bouquets of fresh herbs, and farmer's markets.
here's to a wonderful, memorable summer and to hoping that next summer will be an even greater adventure.

first day of (home)school!

monday was our very first day of school!
he's almost three, my big boy, and he and i are very excited about the new year!
i'm using the same curriculum as last year, because we had so much success with it.
he's coming in ahead of the game (in my opinion, of course!)...he knows all his letters and numbers and is starting to "read"...he knows about 15 words by sight!  he's doing really well with his letters and we are practicing with scissors too!
i'm a proud mama, can you tell? ;)
anyway, he was thrilled to start "school" and we had a great first day back :)

fake smile. :)

putting clouds on the felt board for our weather-of-the-day.

the Pledge.

sorting pasta in our rotating center: this week it's Italy, to kick off our "cultures" series!

new permanent music center...hopefully, we'll be adding a keyboard soon!

checking out all the new books that i added to the reading center...

and we almost always end up in the kitchen center.
can't wait for another exciting year!
